It was a little bit of a letdown for NJ/NY Gotham FC as they couldn't get on the scoresheet in their 2026 NWSL home opener against the North Carolina Courage. They still managed a clean sheet and got through their first two games of the season without a loss, but ended Saturday in a 0-0 draw.
This is the first of a three-game week with the team welcoming Denver Summit FC on Wednesday, followed by the Orlando Pride on Sunday. The tight turnaround means some rest and rotation will be needed, and it showed in tonight's lineup with rookie Jordynn Dudley handed her first start in NWSL.
It was overall a decent result given North Carolina looks to be a much-improved side compared to 2025. At times in 2025, these are the sort of games Gotham would really struggle with, with their home record being less than ideal.
As mentioned, it's a short turnaround to Wednesday when the team welcomes Denver for the first time, and they will need to put some of the negatives of this match behind them as quickly as possible. Denver has a decent backline, so it might be tough once again to score. However, Gotham could potentially capitalize on the team's lack of experience playing together.
Gotham FC was scoreless in the home opener
As the match got started, it was Gotham FC, and in particular Dudley, who made the biggest impact early on. She very nearly got on the scoresheet less than 12 minutes in, what probably would have been one of the best first goals in league history.
The rookie managed to run onto a long ball from Katie Lampson and made a strong run on goal before Courage defender Maycee Bell thwarted the attack. It was a moment that got the entire crowd on their feet. It showed not only Dudley's incredible speed but also her ability to control and dribble the ball at said speed.
That was Gotham's best chance of the half, with a few opportunities from Esther González being placed wide of the goal. Just before halftime, the Courage produced their first forward off of a corner kick and a recycle of possession, but the Bats held firm and went into halftime scoreless.
Coming out of halftime, Gotham very nearly got on the board when a rare Rose Lavelle header found its way on goal, but it was saved by Kailen Sheridan. In the 58th minute, a Courage corner caused a bit of chaos with the ball bouncing around before finding Ashley Sanchez on the edge of the box. The midfielder then uncorked a shot that was straight at, and it was comfortably saved by Ann-Katrin Berger.
Shortly after, the NJ/NY side made a double substitution that saw both Andrea Kitahata make her NWSL debut for Gotham and Tierna Davidson return to the field for the first time since tearing her ACL in a game against the Houston Dash 358 days ago. She immediately slotted into the left center-back role with Jess Carter shifting over to right-back.
This also spelled the end of Dudley's day, with the rookie coming off after an impressive first start and 60 minutes at home for Gotham. From then on, both teams struggled to put together any truly dangerous chances. They both had opportunities and would get the ball in dangerous areas, but whether it be the final ball not finding a player or not being able to get their shot on target, the final product was missing for both sides in the second half.
At the very end of the match, North Carolina had a flurry of pressure similar to what they had at the end of the first half. The best chance from this period of pressure came from Courage forward Shinomi Koyama. She managed to bring the ball into the box and get a shot off in a dangerous area, but Jaelin Howell managed a perfectly timed block that might have been the difference between a draw and a win for Gotham.
And that block was the last major action of the game that saw the Bats pick up their second consecutive clean sheet. Unfortunately, unlike last week, they were unable to find the necessary breakthrough to get three points.
A big theme of tonight's game was the youth. Seven first or second-year players made appearances tonight, including two debuts from Kitahata and Talia Sommer. Obviously, Dudley and Lilly Reale were the main standouts, but Kayla Duran also had a quietly great game. Having to deputize at right-back, given the injury situation, she did a great job of minimizing Ashley Sanchez, which went a long way towards the clean sheet tonight.
The youth will need to step up big time throughout this season. Similar to what fans saw from them in London against AS FAR, both Khyah Harper and Sofia Cook had successful cameos that showed promise of what could be yet to come later on this year.
