Gotham FC earned a second consecutive draw with Portland Thorns in 2026

NJ/NY Gotham FC walked away with just a point in their 1-1 draw with Portland Thorns FC for the second time this year. The Bats scored first but failed to find a response to the Thorns' penalty kick conversion. The result still extended the unbeaten run to 10, which is a club record.

There was a level of frustration post-game, with an overall feeling that they should have come away with all three points. And while that may seem a bit odd given the run they are on, it shows the standard this group of players holds themselves to and the level that they think they can achieve.

On the other side, Portland will see this as a welcoming point, as it marks two games in a row without a loss away from home after winning a few weeks ago against Boston Legacy FC. Prior to that, they had lost five straight away from home, which, in hindsight, has really tanked their chances of contending for the NWSL Shield. A draw with the NJ/NY team still keeps the possibility alive, though.

The season now heads into three straight road games for Gotham FC, starting with a visit to Denver Summit FC next week. This is a really important stretch now for the team, as they have come away with just two points from their previous two games. Earning two or possibly three wins from three could really propel them much closer to the Shield.

Two games, two draws for Gotham FC

The first half was incredibly low-event, with neither team able to create much. Gotham FC's best chance of the half came in the 22nd minute when Jaedyn Shaw delivered a deep cross from the right that found the head of Sam Kerr. Unfortunately, the Australian could not get enough power on it, and it was caught by her international teammate Mackenzie Arnold in the Portland goal.

The best chance of the half came in the 28th minute for Portland. A clever corner routine saw defender Sam Hiatt rise high and get a head to the ball that Ann-Katrin Berger managed to get across and get a hand to. The Thorns nearly one-upped this in the 41st minute when a bad pass saw both Sophia Wilson and Pietra Tordin in a 2v1 situation with Tierna Davidon the lone Gotham defender back.

By some miracle, a poor touch from Wilson on Tordin's pass allowed Berger to grab the loose ball, eliminating the shooting chance. As a result, the match was 0-0 at halftime.

As the second half got started, it was pretty much all Gotham, with Portland unable to make much happen in the attack. Then, in the 60th minute, the home side got their breakthrough. A long-range bomb from Shaw that seemed to have some crazy movement on it caught Arnold off her line and saw Gotham take the lead.

Five minutes later, Jordynn Dudley was forced off due to injury. She had been fouled earlier in the game and received treatment continued. However, she went down again and came out as part of a triple sub that saw Denise O'Sullivan return from injury and make her first appearance at Sports Illustrated Stadium in a Gotham jersey.

Portland was then given a lifeline in the 75th minute when VAR awarded them a penalty kick for an earlier infraction. Jaelin Howell was deemed to have fouled Tordin in the box in an earlier sequence. So, Wilson stepped up and scored, placing the ball in the bottom left of the goal while Berger dove to the right, tying the game at 1-1.

Gotham fought to get the three points after Portland's penalty but were unable to find the back of the net despite the amount of pressure and chances they were able to create in the final 15 minutes. The unbeaten run extends to 10, but it's now consecutive games without a victory and only one goal.

Therefore, the gap stays at seven points, with the Thorns jumping over the Washington Spirit, who will play a home game on Sunday. A win for them would see the gap drop to five, which is still a decent-sized gap, but Gotham FC would obviously like to see it not get any smaller than that moving forward.
