Gotham FC does not need to wait to offer Midge Purce a contract extension

Midge Purce recently signed a new contract with Gotham FC. However, the team should think about a contract extension now rather than later.

Midge Purce is a fan favorite for many NJ/NY Gotham FC supporters. The winger is loved, and when she is 100% healthy, one of the most talented players in the NWSL. It took some time after her return from her 2024 ACL injury, but she seemed to be close to her best self toward the end of the 2025 season.

Her goals and assists were lower than expected, but when one uses the eye test, it is clear that Purce moves with ease on the wings and is threatening again. So, it was not shocking when she re-signed with the Bats for the 2026 season. It was questioned whether she would go elsewhere, but thankfully, she could only see herself with the NJ/NY side for the upcoming campaign.

Gotham FC and Midge Purce can talk about the future

It was interesting that for the second year in a row, Purce only signed a one-year contract. Last year, it made sense, for she missed most of 2024 due to her ACL injury. But it was an interesting choice to only sign a one-year contract now, especially since she wanted to return to Gotham FC.

Therefore, it raises the question: who was responsible for the winger's new contract only being for a year? Was it Purce? Was it the team? Did both agree to a year because neither is sure what the future holds?

These questions should be asked, and Purce is only 30 years old. She could still play at a high level for a few more years and possibly more. A longer contract should have been done, so that means somebody only wanted the year. Nevertheless, the Bats and the player could easily extend this contract before the 2026 season concludes. So, why not do so?

Gotham should start extension talks early in the season. They should communicate early with Purce or her agent and begin the process. That way, fans are not wondering whether she will be back at the end of the season for a third year in a row.

It must be said that the star might not know what her future holds, and might want to wait until the end of 2026. That is why the NJ/NY team should do everything they can to persuade her to sign a longer contract before then. Additionally, if the club is not sure, then perhaps Purce's agent can leak something to the press. Notably, such methods have worked before.

Although it would be difficult to believe that Gotham FC is up in the air about 2027. The Bats love her, and the fans love her. It should be an easy decision to offer her a contract extension.
