Forward Khyah Harper joins the Houston Dash on a free transfer from Gotham FC

On Tuesday afternoon, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced that forward Khyah Harper had completed a free transfer to the Houston Dash. The forward had been limited to just 42 minutes in NWSL play in her second season with the club. Harper is also a free agent, with her contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Harper leaves Gotham FC as both "an NWSL and continental champion, having won the 2025 NWSL Championship and 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup during her rookie season." She also helped the Bats win the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup in June.

What this means for Gotham FC moving forward

The Harper transfer is one of a number of different pieces of news to have broken in the past two days. Between the news of Esther González's departure, Emily Sonnett having surgery following her injury on Friday night, and Taryn Torres coming off the SEI list, it would be fair for Gotham fans to have whiplash from everything that has gone on.

Essentially, this shakes out to the Bats now having 23 players on their active roster. This may end up going down to 22 depending on Sonnett's long-term injury prognosis and whether she ends up on either the D45 or SEI list. 22 is the minimum number of players for an NWSL team to be compliant with league roster rules. This may mean that more business will be done by Gotham in the coming weeks.

Having looked at how things have transpired, this may have been a largely unexpected development for the club. They knew for a while that Torres would be returning from injury at some point in the second half of the season, and the Harper move was probably in the works for some time. However, the Sonnett injury will have obviously been a surprise, and the González news, while something the club was surely aware of, seemed to have developed quickly over the past week.

Due to these moves, another defender and even a striker may now be on Gotham's shopping list this summer. That being said, do not expect any flashy name or a big-time player to come through the door any time soon. They will most likely be looking for depth pieces that complement what Gotham FC already has rather than ready-made starters.
