It has been a long time since Andoni Iraola played for New York City FC. The Athletic Club Bilbao legend spent about a season and a half with the Boys in Blue, joining in the summer of 2015 before his retirement at the end of the 2016 season. Since his playing career, the Spaniard has had a great managerial career. His success has brought him to his new job, in which he will manage one of the biggest teams in the world.
Multiple news organizations and papers, including The Athletic, have announced that Iraola will be the new manager of Liverpool F.C., one of the top teams in the Premier League. He joins the team after three seasons with AFC Bournemouth, leading the side to European competition for the first time. In addition, the Cherries had an 18-game unbeaten streak this year, which is the longest one in club history.
Former NYCFC player Andoni Iraola's new job is a big one
As of now, Liverpool has not officially announced Iraola as the new manager, and the news is based on a verbal agreement. Like always, if anything drastically changes, then this will be updated. Still, the former NYCFC player has turned into one of the more coveted managers in the football world. It did not start that way, though.
His first managerial position was at Cypriot club AEK Larnaca. He did not make it beyond half a season, for he was sacked due to two months without a win. But the firing was a blessing, for it led him to Club Deportivo Mirandés for one season and then Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, S.A.D. for three seasons.
Both Spanish clubs were in the second division, but he led Rayo Vallecano to La Liga in his first season, and the team has remained at the top level since then. His success in Spain eventually led him to Bournemouth. And, as mentioned, he did extremely well with the Cherries.
The difference now is that Iraola has a brand-new pressure on him. Liverpool is expected to be the one of the best of the best, and he must produce results every year. He must lead a team that can compete for the Premier League title. This will be the biggest test to see whether he truly is one of the best managers.
Based on what he did in his previous job, the former NYCFC defender has proven that he is a great manager. Regardless of what happens, Iraola will be fine. But it is good to see someone with connections to the Bronx side take the helm of Liverpool.
