On Wednesday, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced the first move of the offseason, and it was a shocking one. The club announced that Delanie Sheehan departed the team and will not be back with Gotham FC in 2025. The midfielder had an option for next season but opted to go the route of free agency.

This was not expected, for Sheehan was a mainstay player with Gotham FC. She started the majority of the games in 2024 and was vital to the midfield. She was someone many wanted to see back next season, but instead, fans will have to see her in the color orange. The Houston Dash announced they signed Sheehan to a two-year contract with an option for 2027.

Delanie Sheehan's departure was unexpected

As mentioned, Sheehan leaving Gotham FC was shocking. The Bats developed her into the player she is today and she was a starter. Were better offers already made for the midfielder? If that is the case for her departure, then that would be a bad look on the front office. Sheehan is worth every penny she earns.

Perhaps Sheehan wanted another opportunity to try something new. If that is the case, then the move is understandable. Plus, while she will not be in California, she will still be closer to home. That can always be a reason for a player to switch teams.

At the same time, while Sheehan is beloved by the supporters, it must be mentioned that the Bats stress that they will respect the players' wishes. They might have tried to keep her, but the midfielder could have been adamant about trying something new.

Now, Gotham FC has work to do to find Sheehan's replacement. It is possible someone on the roster can now step into her place. Yazmeen Ryan can play in the midfield, which might be an option once Crystal Dunn and Midge Purce are ready in 2025. Notably, Purce could become a free agent too. The versatility of the NJ/NY side allows the team to play around with the Starting XI.

Still, Sheehan will be missed. She turned into a star this season, and Houston is lucky to have her. She might not be someone who consistently scores, but her production in the midfield should aid the Dash with their possession and attack. Her addition already makes the Texas team stronger, for they managed just five wins and finished in last place in 2024. Sheehan's experience with Gotham FC, both the good and bad, will offer Houston a perspective of what they are aiming to achieve.
