On Wednesday, NJ/NY Gotham FC's group round of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup ended. The Bats played their most challenging game against Tigres UANL Femenil. It was not their best defensive match, and arguably, it was the worst of 2024. However, the Bats continued to score multiple goals, leading to a 4-4 draw with the Liga MX Femenil team.

McCall Zerboni, Esther González, Delanie Sheehan, and Maitane López scored for Gotham FC to ensure they would move on in the Champions Cup. The team wanted first place but had to settle for second. Everyone wanted the Bats to win, but there is no question that supporters would say this was probably the craziest fixture of the season.

Again, the team was not strong defensively, predominantly in the first half. The ladies still managed to stay in the match and secure the draw. But which Gotham FC player was the best and who was the worst?

The best and worst Gotham FC players in the 4-4 draw

The best player for Gotham FC was Esther. The forward came on a substitute in the 15th minute due to an injury to Jéssica Silva. She wasted no time in impacting the game. She scored in the 21st minute thanks to brilliant pass from Cece Kizer. Esther held her run to stay onside, and then ran in front of the Tigres players. With just the goalkeeper in front of her, she slid the ball into the goal.

The goal was the Spaniard's fourth in her last three games. She is getting hot at the right time. It is not only about the goals, but Esther has been superb with her play. She is a constant threat offensively and attempts to create chances for her teammates. She also has two assists in her last four matches. While she did not get one against Tigres, the team blossomed offensively with her on the pitch. Esther led the team with three shots, including the goal, making her the most threatening player.

Then, Sheehan was the second-best player. She had a goal and an assist on the night and was vital in the midfield.

Unfortunately, the worst player against Tigres was Mandy Freeman. She is a versatile player who has been great for Gotham FC this season, but she struggled in the defense that night. She played as the right center-back, and opposing players had no issue getting around her.

Freeman could not get the needed stops, which was a major reason why the Bats allowed three of the four goals in the first half. Clearly, Juan Carlos Amorós saw she was struggling and smartly took her out of the game at halftime.

Nevertheless, the struggles of some of the defensive players like Freeman were thankfully countered by the talented attack. Gotham FC's 4-4 draw was a crazy one that many will remember for years.
