If there is one New York City FC player who has become a fan favorite over the last year, then Alonso Martínez is the answer. The Costa Rican, originally signed as a winger, moved into the striker position and has not looked back. He scored 16 goals in the regular season and already scored one this year in the draw against Inter Miami CF.

Therefore, NYCFC is rewarding Martínez and his success with a new contract. The club announced that they signed the player to a contract extension. This will keep him with the team through 2027, when the new stadium opens. In addition, there are options in 2028 and 2029.

New contract for Alonso Martínez shows NYCFC believes in him

The new contract illuminates that the club is invested in the striker and believes he can help the Pigeons for many years. It also highlights that he is the first-choice striker. At the same time, with questions surrounding Mounsef Bakrar's ability and Jovan Mijatović out on loan, NYCFC still needs to bring in another center-forward who can compete with the player.

Moreover, Martínez is another option on the wing. Therefore, if NYCFC were ever to bring in a star striker, then the forward could easily play as a winger too. Although, with the extension going until 2027 and possibly as long as 2029, it appears the Bronx team sees him as the man up front and center for the time being.

Plus, the player deserves the contract. Martínez scores goals, but he also puts himself in the proper places for his teammates to send him the ball. When he is not in a scoring position, he will seek out someone who can possibly score. This makes him a well-rounded striker and is also why he is a natural winger.

Sporting Director David Lee recognizes all of this. "We’re thrilled to extend Alonso’s contract and keep him at New York City FC for the long term," he told newyorkcityfc.com. "Since his arrival at the club, we’ve been impressed with his work ethic and dedication to his craft. Last season, we saw Alonso break through and become a dynamic part of our attack, playing a crucial role in our success. Alonso has become an important player for us and one of the best forwards in the league. As we continue to build our roster, we wanted to reward Alonso and make sure that he stayed with the club."

Lee's statement hints that more players are on the way. Martínez signing a contract extension is just as exciting as signing new players. NYCFC made the right move to ensure the Costa Rican stays with the team beyond 2025.
