The Australia national football team had a decent run during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team made it to the knockout rounds after finishing in second place in Group D, but unfortunately, the side was knocked out in the Round of 32 against Egypt. New York City FC's Aiden O'Neill started and played in every single match, while Kai Trewin made his lone appearance in the last game.

Fans of the Pigeons can be proud of their guys, especially O'Neill. The defensive midfielder gave his all in every single minute. His performances for Australia have highlighted how impressive he is as a player and solidified his value to NYCFC.

O'Neill was a rock in the midfield for the Socceroos. He helped direct the pace of play in the midfield while also critically aiding in the defensive effort during the win and draw in the group round, keeping the opposing sides out of the goal. His leadership was also on display throughout the World Cup run.

Just by watching the Aussie, anyone could see how good he was amongst his national team peers. And one aspect that truly stood out was his ability to take free kicks, especially in the Egypt match. One of his free kicks led to an own goal that initially tied the game before the Socceroos were eliminated via a penalty kick shootout.

These four games have elevated what O'Neill means to NYCFC. He has already been vital to the club, but now, there is no way the team can be without him at this time. With Maxi Moralez out for the rest of the season, and possibly the rest of his career, the Australian can split the free kicks with Nicolás Fernández Mercau.

In addition, Pascal Jansen must realize that O'Neill needs to start as often as he can. His contribution to the defense has been important, but now, with James Sands back, the team's defense should improve after an uncharacteristic first half of the season.

Plus, the World Cup might mean that certain teams might have their eyes on him. O'Neill already came to the club from Europe, and at 28, he could still play in some of the leagues there that are slightly better than Major League Soccer and NYCFC. In that sense, the Pigeons might want to ensure that he does not go anywhere in the near future.

Then, there is O'Neill the person. His response to his time playing at the World Cup shows that he loves the teams he plays for, but also appreciates the support that fans have shown around the world. NYCFC fans already know who they have playing for them, but this solidifies who he is even more. He plays for the crest on his shirt.
