Over the years, there have been quite a few disappointing signings for New York City FC, especially some of the young players with potential. Jovan Mijatović is a great example, as he was expected to be a star striker, but he only lasted a year before leaving on loan. Then, some players showed potential, like Julián Fernández. He started to grow into the player he was expected to be, but he never fully made it before leaving on loan this year.

It can be frustrating when signings do not live up to expectations, but sometimes, patience is worth it. Agustín Ojeda is a perfect example. Since joining the club in 2024, the winger has slowly grown into a solid player in Major League Soccer. His 2024 and 2025 seasons were not the greatest, but he showed potential and glimpses of what he could be.

Agustín Ojeda proves patience is important

In 2026, Ojeda has scored five goals, and he has ten assists. He has also increased his playing time significantly. In the regular season, he played about 1,300 minutes in 2025, but this year, he has played over 2,040 minutes. He has started every single game that he has played in, and he has deserved the starts, too.

For some fans, before this season, they might have been okay if Ojeda joined Fernández by going out on loan. Improvement was needed from the player. Thankfully, he stayed with NYCFC. He earned Pascal Jansen's trust by strengthening his abilities on the pitch. Sure, he still needs to improve his clinical touch, but his ten assists make up for the five goals.

Meanwhile, it is not just about the stats, either. Ojeda's footwork and ability on the ball have slightly changed in the sense that he can better control the ball and maintain possession. His runs up the pitch have made a difference in the final third. This was recently on full display during the win against Real Salt Lake. His runs were perfect, and he had the assist on both goals.

In addition, Ojeda makes smarter decisions, especially with his passes. His football IQ has increased, and he is also more confident as a player. And of course, he can play on both sides of the wings. That gives Jansen flexibility with his lineup.

When all is said and done, sometimes it is good to be patient with younger players. Ojeda is a great example. His first two years were not great, but now he has turned into a great player for NYCFC.
