After every game, it feels like NJ/NY Gotham FC and the rest of the playoff contenders in the NWSL continue to stay close to one another in the standings.  Therefore, the NJ/NY side knew how important it was to pick up three points at home against Seattle Reign FC.  However, they dropped points after he match ended in a 0-0 draw.  This was the second draw of the year between the teams.

The result was a frustrating one due to Gotham FC’s play.  They were the better team, and truthfully, the ladies should have won.  They maintained about 64% of the possession and had an 87% passing accuracy.  They also had ten shots with four on target.  Meanwhile, the Reign was held to just one shot in total.

Still, credit must be given when due, and Seattle was superb defensively.  They limited the Bats’ clinical shots while reducing the offensive opportunities.  Additionally, Claudia Dickey had a super game between the sticks, saving every shot on target.  Yes, the home team should have scored despite the defensive work from the visitors.  After all, they were at home.

It would have been nice for the game to end in a win.  Alas, it did not.  Here are three things we learned from the 0-0 draw with Gotham FC and Seattle Reign FC.

Gotham FC tied their unbeaten record

Of course, a win was preferred from Gotham FC, especially at home.  While the team did not secure the three points, there was a positive.  The Bats tied their unbeaten streak record of 11 games in all competitions from 2024.  This gives them a chance to now break the record against the Kansas City Current next week.  Although, based on the NWSL Shield winners’ season, it feels a little out of reach.

This time around, Gotham has seven wins and four draws during the streak.  In 2024, they had eight wins and three draws.  Both are solid runs, especially with how competitive the NWSL can be.  Plus, the fact that this was done one year later, regardless of the struggles that occurred in parts of the 2025 campaign, highlights how the team is run and their ability to compete over the last few seasons.

Gotham FC continues to drop points at home

For some reason, Gotham FC cannot figure out how to turn Sports Illustrated Stadium back into the fortress that the venue was in 2024.  They were 9-1-3 last season, and fans were mostly guaranteed that the team would earn points.

This year, the NJ/NY side is 4-4-4, and only one game remains.  As such, the team has dropped 20 points in this campaign compared to the last one’s nine.  It really is frustrating, especially since this is a team that is capable of being better.

Funny enough, the 2023 NWSL Championship season’s home record was 4-3-4.  That year, Gotham FC finished the season in sixth before going on that magical run.  Perhaps the Bats will do something similar this year, for it feels like there are aspects of 2023 and 2024 that are a part of the 2025 team.

Should fans be concerned?

It is vital that Gotham FC earns as many points as possible in their final three games.  It will be difficult against the Current, but anything can happen in the beautiful game and in the final matches.

However, is it time to be concerned that the Bats are entering a stretch of their goal-scoring struggles and earning wins?  Yes, they are in the middle of the 11-game unbeaten run.  But in the last four matches in all competitions, three have ended in draws, with two being 0-0 draws.  More importantly, in the NWSL, the team has only earned five of nine possible points.

At the same time, Gotham FC had a fantastic win against Portland Thorns FC.  The 3-1 win was arguably one of their best of the season.  Therefore, it is difficult to pinpoint whether fans should be worried.  At this rate, it might depend on the individual.  However, if the team struggles for the rest of the season, then it will be easy to declare that fans should be concerned entering the NWSL Playoffs.
