This weekend, New York City FC will play in their home opener against Orlando City SC.  While this will not be the last home opener around this time of the year, it is the last one for a full season of play.  As it is known, Major League Soccer will switch over to a summer-spring schedule next year, with a transition season between the current one and the new one.

In some ways, this makes the current home opener special.  Additionally, it is great that the home opener will be in the afternoon, allowing more families with younger kids to attend the match.  History is also on NYCFC’s side, for they have only lost twice in their home openers.  Plus, the Pigeons last lost to Orlando in 2022.  So, expectations will be high for the fans in the seats cheering the team on.

The Bronx side does not want to start the season at home in a bad way, either.  The team lost six times during the regular season at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, which is not typical for the team.  Since this is the last full year at the baseball stadiums, it would be better for most of the games to end in wins.  Sure, despite the good start, there are still concerns about the lack of a starting striker.  But that should not be an excuse for any losses at home.

As such, three points are needed.  Here is a preview of NYCFC’s home opener against Orlando City SC.

NYCFC vs Orlando City preview

Date

NYCFC will play against Orlando City on Saturday, March 7.

Time

The fixture will begin at 2:30 PM ET.

Location

The game will be at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

How to watch

Since MLS and Apple ended the MLS Season Pass, supporters can stream the match on Apple TV.

Weather

It will not be the greatest day for a game.  At the very least, fans will be at Yankee Stadium during the daylight and when it is a little warmer compared to the evening hours.  At kickoff, it will be cloudy and around 45 degrees.  Truthfully, while the forecast is not the best weather, compared to the winter that fans endured, it is beautiful.  Of course, as long as it does not rain, for there is about a 20% chance.

Injury report

Malachi Jones (leg), Alonso Martínez (leg), and Andrés Perea (leg) are all unavailable to play against Orlando.

Players to watch

Aiden O’Neill is the player to watch for NYCFC.  The midfielder started the first two games and appears to be the chosen starter in the defensive midfield.  The question is who will partner with him there, or whether Pascal Jansen will adjust the formation.  The Australian has been consistent in his play, though, since he joined the team last year.  His importance in helping the backline will ideally lead to another strong defensive performance like the Pigeons had against the Philadelphia Union.

Orlando’s Martín Ojeda is the other player to watch.  He has been incredible for the Florida side. He scored 16 goals and had 15 assists in the 2025 regular season and was the Lions’ best player.  He already has a goal this year, and the midfielder/forward is arguably the biggest threat.

Prediction

This is a match the Boys in Blue should win.  So, the prediction is that NYCFC will win 2-0.  Talles Magno will contribute to another goal and continue to grow back into the team.  O’Neill and Thaigo Martins should be the players who aid Matt Freese the most in keeping the ball out of the goal.
